The most common of a medieval warrior usually sees him with a sword. While the sword was indeed was frequently used in the Middle Ages, other weapons proved to be just as effective, if not more, in warfare. As armor shifted from chainmail to plate, it provided stronger and more complete protection. As a result, swords were less effective and thrusting into metal armor could actually damage a sword. Thus, other weapons such as the mace, battle axe, flail, and war hammer were brought onto the scene for maximum fighting power. These defensive tools were used by knights and foot soldiers yielding great success.
