Crusader Helmets

As the Crusades lasted for centuries, it is only logical that the styles of knightly head gear changed with the times. While many different variations developed, the most popular Crusader helmet was the Great Helm. This was a massive piece constructed from iron and weighing as much as 10 pounds. Though it was not the most comfortable to wear, as it got hot and limited visibility, it provided full protection for a knight’s head, making it nearly invincible to an enemy’s blow. Earlier versions were flat topped, but eventually shifted to a curved shape, which proved to be more effective. In the Late Middle Ages, Crusader helmets were largely replaced by bascinets, but their legacy lived on with uses in jousting tournaments and other occasions off the battlefield.
