These weapons possessed a sacred nature and they were given names and passed down through families from generation to generation. Early Viking swords were constructed with blades of pure iron. When this composition didn’t prove to be durable in battle, other types of metal were brought in and combined together to create a stronger, more effective blade. Swords were typically designed for one handed use and blades were commonly double-edged, sharp, and long, with a length ranging from 60-100 cm.
