Just as weapons and warfare were constantly changing during the nearly 1,000 year medieval period, armor was as well. The Early Middle Ages began with chainmail hauberks being the chief protection for the body. However, the development of sharper weapons required stronger armor and this led to the emergence of plate armor in the 13th century. Typically constructed from iron or steel, plate armor was able to withstand harsher thrusts and blows. Among these pieces was the breastplate which provided protection for the torso. In addition to being part of a warrior’s armor, the breastplate was also a symbol of status and religious significance. Proven to be effective on the battlefield, no knight was without a breastplate and with Armor Venue’s line of medieval breastplates, neither will you be.
