The buckler shield was a small shield used in Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. It is characterized by a central handle which makes it easy for a one-handed grip. It typically served as a companion weapon in hand to hand combat, as well as for defense in swordplay. The buckler shield functioned as hand protection, a deflector, a blinder, and a metal fist. There were two styles of buckler shield with one being an oval shape with the handle behind the boss and one with a rectangular shape. Drawing upon this inspiration comes the The Talhofer Grand Master Buckler Shield which is named after Hans Talhoffer, a 15th century fencing master associated with Johannes Liechtenauer, the grand master of the Medieval German school of fencing. He wrote over five fencing manuals over his life time covering many weapons. Featuring 16 gauge steel construction with a black finish, this unique shield handsomely reflects his legacy. It is light weight and convenient to carry. It also promises to be effective for fencing and re-enactments and is a great for costumes and display.
