Just as clothing and shoe fashion of today reflects society’s current climate, such was the case in the Middle Ages. In particular, medieval footwear mirrored the political and social changes happening at the time. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, territories were scattered and isolated and as a result, shoe styles were varied in style. Generally, shoes were made of tough leather and embroidered together. As kingdoms became more unified, footwear styles did as well. Pointed shoes became the norm and the inclusion of buckles and buttons entered the scene. For soldiers and workers, boots of varying lengths were worn as the primary footwear.
