Description/Features
During the 15th century, the T-face Barbute Helmet was developed in Italy to complement the armor the country?s fighters wore that was typically a little rounder and larger than other styles. They quickly became popular throughout the rest of Europe and served as a great alternative to the traditional sallet that was far more restrictive. The rounded top offers more protection to the head while the curved bottom in the back protected the neck. What made this style so desirable though were the extended sides, which protected the jaw, without having to wear a gorget or bevor. One was granted increased protection with more visibility.
Made from 14-gauge steel, our T-face Barbute Helmet is a replication of the helmet belonging to the 'Avant' armor, which is kept secure at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. It features a chin strap and leather lining, making it ideal for SCA combat, costume and reenactment.
Measurements: Front to Back: 9''
Side to Side: 7 3/4''
Forehead circumference: up to 26 inches.
Weight: 6.5 lbs.

Good, Solid Helmet
March 6, 2014 by Faramir (Cartwright, ND)
“This is a good, solid helmet for a good price. It is a bit big on my head though, but some padding on the sides will fix that. The chinstrap is a bit big too and will need to be modified.”

The leather liner is bonded to the inside of the helmet and makes for a snug fight…not a lot of room for padding though and I received a large.
For those of you who DO fight...It's been more than a minute since I fought but for those in the SCA, you know, that armor requirements are strict. This Barbute has made me seriously happy. Its seriously solid, but the "T" opening may not pass the inspections of some marshals. A small bar modification could fix this, if it became a problem. Additionally, the ad reads that this helm alleviates the need for a bevor or gorget...uh I think you might still want to wear a gorget with this.”
