Description

The Dragonfly Katana embodies the essential qualities that define a traditional katana, yet with its own distinctive character. The blade is thinner and lighter, skillfully hand-forged and folded to create a layered structure. This particular blade blends T-10 and 1055 steel, a combination that produces a vivid contrast between the layers. When polished, the blade reveals a clear hada, the visible grain pattern that speaks to the folding and forging process.

In samurai culture, the dragonfly symbolized perseverance and agility, traits highly regarded by warriors who sought to serve their lords tirelessly. The fittings on this sword are crafted to resemble aged iron, lending an aura of history and use. The tsuba, or handguard, is made from iron with a copper-inlaid dragonfly, its gleaming form standing out against the darkened iron surface, reflecting the samurai’s respect for nature and symbolism.

The handle is wrapped in dark brown silk ito over real ray skin, contrasted by black same (ray skin) beneath, a traditional method that provides grip and durability. The blade’s geometry includes a lower shinogi line and a slender hira-niku (blade thickness), resulting in a lighter, quicker blade that offers less resistance against softer targets. The tsuka (handle) features a subtle “waisting” or ryugo, a shape favored by practitioners of Japanese sword arts for its balance and comfort in the hand.

This katana is available in multiple blade lengths and handle configurations to suit various preferences.
