Description

The Dragonfly Katana embodies the essential qualities that define a traditional katana, yet it carries its own distinctive character. The blade is thinner and lighter, hand-forged and folded through a careful process that blends T-10 tool steel with 1055 carbon steel. This combination of steels creates a striking contrast in the layers, and when polished, reveals a clearly visible hada, the unique grain pattern that speaks to the blade’s folding and forging history.

In samurai culture, the dragonfly was more than just an insect; it symbolized swift, tireless movement, reflecting the samurai’s unwavering dedication to serving his lord without rest. The fittings of this katana echo that reverence. The tsuba (hand guard) is crafted from iron with a copper inlay shaped as a dragonfly, the warm copper standing out against the dark, weathered iron surface. This antique finish recalls the look of aged ironwork, lending the sword a sense of history and authenticity.

The handle (tsuka) is wrapped in dark brown silk ito over genuine ray skin (same), with black accents that enhance the grip’s texture and appearance. The blade features a lower shinogi (ridge line) and a reduced hira-niku (blade thickness beneath the ridge), which lightens the blade and allows for quicker cuts with less resistance, especially against softer targets. The tsuka’s subtle “waisting,” known as ryugo, is a shape favored by many practitioners of Japanese sword arts for its ergonomic feel and control.

This katana comes in three blade lengths and handle options, reflecting the variety of preferences among sword users and collectors.

Fun fact: The Dragonfly Katana’s name honors the insect’s revered status among samurai, who believed that dragonflies brought victory and protection in battle.
