Description
Throughout Japanese history, certain katanas have been crafted to honor the memory of renowned rulers, warriors, and legendary battles. This particular katana pays tribute to Nagasone Kotetsu, a famed swordsmith of the Edo period. Born into a family of armor makers, Kotetsu transitioned his skills to blade forging, developing a reputation for blades known for their strength and resilience. Stories tell of his swords cutting through kabuto helmets, though such feats are best left to legend rather than attempted firsthand. While historical records debate the exact number of swords he produced, and many imitations bear his name, the enduring quality attributed to his work remains influential. Collectors and practitioners often study his legacy to understand the craftsmanship and spirit of his era.
This katana, named the Armourer’s Katana, honors Kotetsu’s legacy. Its tsuba features pierced yanone (arrowhead) motifs, a design echoed in the menuki, reflecting the simplicity and strength characteristic of Kotetsu’s blades.
Two words capture the essence of this sword: hidden strength. Its understated elegance is revealed in the blackened, textured handle fittings contrasted with silver menuki. The handle is wrapped in dark brown Japanese cotton ito over genuine samegawa (ray skin) in a traditional diamond pattern. The saya is finished in a rich chocolate brown lacquer, complemented by a light brown sageo and buffalo horn fittings on the kurikata and kojiri, harmonizing the overall aesthetic.
The blade itself is forged from a blend of T10 and 1055 carbon steels, folded to reveal a distinct hada (grain pattern) while maintaining toughness. The hamon follows the o-choji style, a classic pattern of large, irregular clove-shaped temper lines running along the edge.
It is fitting to imagine that Nagasone Kotetsu would recognize the qualities embodied in this katana, strength, resilience, and straightforward beauty forged into a weapon built for both form and function.
Fun fact: In the hands of an armorer, a katana is more than just a blade,it’s a living piece of history, carrying the spirit of countless battles and the skill of generations of craftsmen.
