Description
Some katana are forged to honor the memory of great rulers, warlords, generals, and warriors from Japanese history and legend. This particular katana pays tribute to Nagasone Kotetsu, a renowned swordsmith from the Edo period. Born into a family skilled in armor-making, Kotetsu eventually turned his craft toward the art of blade forging. His blades earned a reputation for strength and resilience, with tales claiming they could slice through a kabuto helmet, though such feats are best left to legend. The exact number of swords he produced remains uncertain, as many imitations bear his name. Yet, the enduring quality and spirit of his work continue to inspire swordsmiths and collectors alike. While the full story of his life is extensive, anyone with an interest in Japanese blades would do well to study his legacy carefully.
This katana honors Kotetsu with the design named the Armourer’s Katana. The tsuba (hand guard) features pierced yanone motifs, a design echoed in the menuki (ornamental grip fittings). These elements reflect the simplicity, elegance, and strength characteristic of Kotetsu’s blades.
Two words sum up this katana: hidden strength. Its power is masked by a modest aesthetic, from the blackened, textured handle fittings to the silver menuki. The handle is wrapped in a traditional diamond pattern with dark brown Japanese cotton ito over genuine samegawa (ray skin). The saya (scabbard) is finished in a deep chocolate brown, complemented by a lighter brown sageo cord and buffalo horn kurikata and kojiri fittings, completing the harmonious color scheme.
The blade itself is forged from a blend of T10 and 1055 steels, folded to reveal a distinct hada (grain pattern) while maintaining toughness. The hamon (temper line) follows the o-choji style, a classic pattern along the blade’s edge. Detailed specifications are listed below for those interested in the technical aspects.
It is fitting to imagine that Nagasone Kotetsu would recognize the qualities embodied in this tribute, strength, resilience, and unadorned power forged into a single weapon. This katana stands as a testament to those principles and the enduring spirit of the swordsmith’s craft.
Fun fact: The katana’s folded steel technique not only strengthens the blade but also creates unique patterns in the metal, making each sword a one-of-a-kind work of art.
