Description
The 1860 Naval Cutlass is a faithful reproduction of the cutlass crafted by Ames and first issued in 1860. This sword features a hand-forged, unsharpened blade made from high carbon steel, providing the strength and resilience needed for naval combat. The brass cup hilt offers solid hand protection, while the grip is constructed from wood wrapped in leather and wire, ensuring a firm hold even in the heat of battle. Accompanying the sword is a leather scabbard with brass fittings and a leather belt frog, designed to securely carry the cutlass aboard ship. The blade measures 25 1/2″ in length, with an overall sword length of 31 1/2″, making it well balanced for the close quarters fighting common on wooden vessels and among ironclad sailors. The brass basket hand-guard was specifically shaped to protect the hand during boarding actions and skirmishes in tight spaces.
Fun fact: The 1860 Naval Cutlass was favored for its sturdy construction and reliability, becoming a symbol of naval authority and close combat efficiency during the American Civil War.
