Modeled after a genuine WWII design, this cutting tool was built to meet the varied demands faced by airmen in the field. Issued by the US Army Air Force, it was a crucial component of the Pilot’s Bail Out Kit,intended as a survival aid for those who found themselves downed in hostile or untamed environments. Its uses were as diverse as the challenges encountered: slicing through thick underbrush, crafting splints and stretchers, gathering food, and providing a means of defense if required. The original example, produced by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company, boasts a long blade forged from high carbon steel. This blade holds a sharp edge straight from the smith’s fire, ready to tackle tough tasks in jungle or wilderness settings. A heavy-duty liner lock secures the blade firmly when open, preventing accidental closure during demanding work. The handle is constructed from thick black plastic panels, carefully shaped for a comfortable grip and riveted solidly to the tang, ensuring dependable control even with wet hands or gloves. A blued steel blade guard protects the cutting edge when stowed. While the black canvas belt sheath is a modern addition, it is designed for practical carry in the field, allowing quick access and secure retention.
