Citadel Wolf Wakizashi – Limited Edition I
The Wolf Wakizashi is forged entirely by hand in a small workshop, where each blade is shaped and finished individually. This approach means every sword carries subtle differences, a testament to the smith’s hand and the heat of the forge. The nakago (tang) bears the smith’s signature and sword number, honoring the tradition of Japanese swordmaking where the smith’s mark is an integral part of the blade’s identity.
This wakizashi complements the Wolf Katana, moving beyond the usual black katana style into a design that evokes the wild spirit of its namesake. The tsuba (handguard) features a black etched wolf motif, a nod to the artisan’s skill in metalwork and attention to detail. The fuchi (collar) and kashira (pommel) are gently textured, offering a tactile connection to the sword’s craftsmanship. The 21-inch blade is forged from DNH7 steel, known for its balance of hardness and toughness, and features a bo-hi (groove) that reduces weight without sacrificing strength. Measuring 5.5mm thick near the spine, the blade holds a sharp edge hardened to around 60 HRC, while the back remains softer for resilience.
The tsuka (handle) is 9 inches long and wrapped in suede ito over white samegawa (ray skin), which is carved specifically for each sword to ensure a secure fit and proper tension in the wrap. The menuki (ornamental grips beneath the wrap) display a cloud and moon motif, symbolizing the balance of nature and time. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered in dark brown with a gray mist effect, finished with buffalo horn kurikata (knob) and kojiri (end cap). Like the tsuka, the saya is carved to fit each blade snugly, securing the wakizashi when sheathed.
