The Vikings were tough. The Vikings were fierce. The Vikings were brave. The Vikings were…colorful! While many picture ancient European warriors in muted tones, Viking shields were often painted with bright, bold designs that told stories and struck fear into their enemies. This hand-painted shield reflects those originals closely, right down to the individual wooden planks carefully joined edge to edge.
The shield is divided into red and gray quadrants, each accented with yellow circles,colors that would have caught the eye on the battlefield. Its metal rim is made from overlapping iron sections, held together with rivets to provide some give while still standing strong against strikes. At the center sits a steel boss, forged to shield the hand gripping the wooden handle set behind it. This blend of wood, iron, and paint shows the practical craftsmanship Viking smiths and shieldmakers put into their work.
Fun fact: Viking wooden shields were often repaired and reforged multiple times, with battle scars serving as a record of the shield’s many encounters in war.
