Among the weapons favored by Viking warriors, the halberd,or bill, as some referred to it,was prized for its reach and multifaceted use in battle. Though no original Viking halberds have survived, the term likely referred to a weapon designed to pierce mail armor. This reconstruction takes its cues from saga accounts and surviving axes with blade shapes resembling what we now call halberds. Figures such as Gunnar of Hildebrand, Thorolf Skallagrimsson, and Egill Skallagrimsson are celebrated in the sagas for their prowess with such weapons. In one intense battle, Thorolf, driven by rage, grips his halberd with both hands and cleaves through foes as he advances on the enemy’s banner. He fells the standard bearer, breaks the pole, and thrusts the blade into the Earl himself, then plants the weapon in the ground as a stark warning to all who behold it. Forged from high carbon steel, this piece channels the rugged spirit and practicality of the Viking warrior’s armory.

Fun fact: Although the halberd is often linked with later medieval Europe, the Viking war halberd’s design, with its combination of axe blade, spear point, and hook, helped shape polearms used for centuries, effective against both armored foot soldiers and mounted foes.
