Description
This heavy-weave tunic is made from thick cotton, built to offer warmth and stand up to the demands faced by a Viking warrior. It serves as a sturdy base garment, worn by both rekkrs (warrior men) and kvennalið (women), fitting those who live by the rugged ways of the North. You can wear it alone or layered over other clothes, whether gearing up for a raid or braving the cold on a long trek through the fjords and forests.
Note: The Small/Medium size fits chests up to 40″, while the Large/X-Large suits chests 42″ and above, reflecting the range of builds common among Viking age folk.
Back in the Viking Age, tunics like this were typically handwoven from wool or linen, materials chosen for their warmth and availability. While cotton wasn’t native to Scandinavia, it’s become a favored choice among reenactors for its toughness and ease of care. Vikings relied on their tunics not just for shielding against wind and cold, but also as a way to show rank and wealth through the colors and decorative trims they added.
Fun fact: Viking tunics were usually cut in a simple T-shape and stitched by hand, a construction that allowed warriors and farmers alike plenty of freedom to move, whether swinging an axe or tending the fields.
