Description

Circa 750
The seax, or sax, was a staple blade across Northern Europe, carried by the Saxons, Angles, Vikings, and various Germanic tribes. Its origins likely reach back to before the fall of Rome, with its use continuing well into the early Middle Ages. Seaxes came in many sizes, from small utility knives with blades just 3 to 4 inches long to larger fighting blades nearly as long as a short sword, around 27 to 28 inches. Always single-edged, the blade’s shape could vary greatly depending on its intended use. This large knife was a multipurpose tool, used for everything from daily camp chores and shipboard work to a dependable weapon when a sword or axe wasn’t at hand.

This reproduction features a brass lobed pommel and guard, reflecting designs found on archaeological finds. The wooden grip is fastened with brass tacks, offering a secure hold suitable for both labor and combat. The blade is forged from high carbon steel, flat ground, and sharpened on one edge to hold a keen, durable edge. The etched decoration echoes the patterns often seen on original seaxes. The leather sheath is crafted with rivets and lacing techniques authentic to the period and includes two thong slots for versatile carry options. Examples of seaxes like this one can be seen in museum collections across Europe.

Fun fact: The name “seax” is actually the root of the word “Saxon,” underscoring how closely this blade was tied to the identity of the people who wielded it.
