Description

Did Vikings actually wear helmets adorned with horns? Most historians agree they probably did not. While the horned helmet has become a striking symbol in popular imagination, practical warfare gear required balance and mobility, making horns more of a hindrance than a help on the battlefield. Still, such helmets capture the spirit of Viking lore and make for an impressive display.

This helmet is crafted in the style of a traditional Spangenhelm, a common helmet type during the early medieval period. It is forged from sturdy 18-gauge mild steel, providing solid protection without excessive weight. The helmet features pure brass eyebrow trims, which not only add a touch of detail but also reinforce the eye area. Two cheek plates are attached to shield the sides of the face, and a broad, curved projection guards the nape of the neck, a vulnerable spot in combat.

The pair of detachable horns are carved from genuine buffalo horn, lending authenticity to the piece when displayed. While these horns would have been impractical in real combat, they offer a glimpse into how Viking imagery has evolved through the centuries.
