Description
Braid your skegg (beard) and don your Spangenhelm, for this Viking-inspired axe is crafted to stir the spirit of adventure. The handle, carved from sturdy American Hickory, bears the elder Futhark Othala rune,a symbol of heritage and ancestral lands, serving as a reminder of home as you venture into new realms. This set also includes a hand-forged skinning knife and a wooden display box adorned with traditional knotwork and Norse dragons, echoing the artistry of the Northmen.
The axe: The axe head features a narrow, bearded blade design typical of those wielded by Vikings across Norway. This shape allows for a strong chopping edge while keeping the tool light enough for one-handed use when needed. The handle is stained a deep brown and shaped with a groove along its length, secured at both ends with brass tacks. The leather-wrapped grip has been treated to an aged finish, suggesting a well-traveled weapon. A leather sheath accompanies the blade for safe transport. Dimensions: 24″ overall length; axe head 6” wide with a 5-3/4” cutting edge. Forged from 1075 carbon steel, the axe weighs just over 2 pounds.
The knife: The accompanying skinning knife carries a rough-forged texture, shaped by hand with a distinctive ring grip ending in a curled flourish, reflecting the organic forms found in Viking craftsmanship. Its leather sheath is fitted with a thong long enough to wear at the neck, waist, or slung over the shoulder. Dimensions: 4-3/8″ overall length; blade 2-3/8″. Weight: approximately 2.3 ounces.
The wooden display box is lined with black velvet to cradle the tools. Two leather straps with buckles secure the axe firmly inside, while the antiqued brass hinges and clasp lock provide a fitting finish. Box dimensions measure 26-1/2″ x 7-3/4″ x 2-3/4”.
Fun fact: Viking bearded axes were prized not only for their effectiveness in battle but also for their utility as everyday tools, making them a symbol of both warrior prowess and practical skill.
