Description

Circa 1424

This sword is named after the Battle of Verneuil, a fierce engagement that, like Agincourt, marked a crucial English triumph during the closing years of the Hundred Years War. The blade is of the hand-and-a-half variety, designed to be wielded with either one hand or two. This flexibility gave warriors the advantage of extending their reach while retaining the control needed for close combat. The steel blade has been treated with a deep antiqued bronze patina, a technique that not only lends the weapon the appearance of age but also serves to guard against rust and wear. The grip, fashioned from solid wood and wrapped in tough leather, ensures a firm hold even amid the chaos of battle. Both English and French fighters valued this style of sword for its balanced weight and nimble handling, traits essential when fighting in tight formations or on horseback. The scabbard, made to complement the sword’s design, completes the ensemble. This particular blade was forged by Windlass Steelcrafts®, known for their dedication to traditional smithing methods.

Fun fact: The Verneuil sword’s hand-and-a-half design, often called a “bastard sword,” represents a shift in sword-making as warriors adapted to changing battlefield tactics, bridging the gap between the single-handed arming sword and the larger two-handed greatsword.
