Description

This helmet is a fine example of the classic Close Helm, a design that saw wide use among knights in the early 1500s. It was a common sight during the military campaigns of Henry VIII in France between 1522 and 1523, worn by men on both sides of the conflict. The term “Close Helm” refers to how the helmet encloses the entire head, leaving only a narrow slit for the eyes. This limited field of vision was a deliberate trade-off to provide maximum protection in the thick of battle. The visor is fitted with small, keyhole-shaped ventilation holes on either side, which helped the wearer breathe without sacrificing defense. Beneath the visor lies the bevor, a piece that shields the chin and lower face; it consists of two overlapping plates hinged at the sides and fastened securely under the chin. When the visor is locked down over the bevor, it forms a solid, nearly impenetrable barrier against blows.

Made from 18 gauge hammer-hardened steel, this helmet is crafted to closely mirror the shape and practical design of those worn centuries ago.

Fun fact: The narrow eye slit on Tudor Close Helms was so restrictive that knights often relied on signals and commands from their squires to navigate the chaos of battle.
