Description
This helmet represents an important phase in the evolution of knightly head protection. Earlier helmets often featured just a nasal bar or a simple mail coif with a face flap, leaving much of the face exposed. This design, however, offers increased coverage across the face, signaling a move toward more enclosed helmets that better shielded the wearer in battle. Forged from 18 gauge steel, the helmet’s construction is robust, reflecting the practical needs of warriors who faced heavy blows. Over the years, helmets like this would develop into the barrel helm, which provided near-complete coverage of the head and face, improving defense without sacrificing too much visibility or airflow.
Fun fact: The Transitional Combat Helmet earned its name because it bridges the gap between open-faced helmets and fully enclosed ones, representing a key development in medieval armor technology.
