These boots are hand fashioned from supple 4-ounce leather, with soles and heels also crafted from leather, reflecting the construction methods used between the 15th and 17th centuries. Back then, high boots were more than mere footwear; they served as a protective layer against sword cuts, brush, and other hazards faced on the battlefield. The design allows the upper part of the boot to be folded down to calf height, a common feature in Renaissance and Medieval attire that helped riders and foot soldiers move more freely while offering options for ventilation and style. This pair is dyed black and includes two buckles on the upper shaft to adjust the fit, though these are concealed beneath the rolled-down cuff, which measures about 5-3/4 inches. The full height when worn upright reaches approximately 30-1/4 inches. Such boots were typically worn by men and were sized here in 12 and 13.
Fun Fact: In the Renaissance period, high boots like these were often favored by cavalrymen, as the extended leather provided crucial protection for the lower leg during mounted combat.
