Description

In crafting a medieval shield true to the old ways, we begin by layering sixteen thin sheets of wood, each carefully shaped and pressed. This method, passed down through generations, binds the wood into a single, resilient unit, stronger and lighter than a single thick plank. Each layer is soaked to make the wood pliable, then pressed to the shield’s form, building a sturdy wall that can absorb and deflect blows in battle.

The classic heater shape is then sheathed in heavy cotton fabric, providing a base for the decorative rivets that hold the shield’s elements together. A wooden grip is fitted on the inside, paired with a backing of closed-cell foam for comfort and shock absorption. This is covered with full-grain leather, tough enough to withstand the rigors of combat, while an adjustable forearm strap ensures the shield stays secure during movement.

Measuring 30 inches tall by 22 inches wide, and weighing just over 5 pounds, this shield strikes a balance between protection and maneuverability, crucial for any warrior stepping onto the battlefield.

Fun fact: The Teutonic Knights favored a similar heater shield design, often emblazoned with their distinctive black cross, which became a symbol of their order during the crusades in the Baltic region.
