Description
The German Order of the Teutonic Knights was founded in the late 12th century, originally to assist pilgrims traveling through the Holy Land. Over time, they transformed into a military order, playing a crucial role in battles such as the defense of Acre during the Third Crusade. Later, their focus shifted to Eastern Europe, where they established a stronghold in Transylvania to defend the Kingdom of Hungary against raids by nomadic Cumans.
This tunic reflects the traditional garment worn by Teutonic Knights. Its plain white fabric represented purity and unwavering commitment to their cause. The bold black cross emblazoned on the chest was the order’s unmistakable mark, a symbol that carried weight both on and off the battlefield. Historically, these tunics were made from wool or linen, materials chosen for their durability and comfort during long campaigns. This reproduction uses white polyester for practicality, but the design retains key authentic features. The faux leather trim along the collar and shoulders suggests the reinforced areas that would support chainmail or a surcoat beneath. The front, back, and side splits were not mere decoration, they allowed knights greater freedom of movement, vital when mounted or wielding heavy weapons.
Wearing this tunic alongside a hooded cape would present the full image of a Teutonic Knight ready for both ceremony and combat.
Note: The Small/Medium size fits chest measurements up to 40″, while the Large/X-Large accommodates those 42″ and above.
Fun fact: The black cross of the Teutonic Knights was more than just an emblem; it helped soldiers recognize one another amidst the chaos of battle, strengthening unity and resolve on the medieval battlefield.
