Description
The Spetsnaz,Soviet special forces forged in the crucible of WWII Russia, needed a blade tough enough for the harsh demands of survival and combat. During the Cold War, their requirement for a rugged, multi-purpose tool led to the survival machete, built not just for chopping and cutting, but also prying, sawing, hammering, and a variety of field tasks. This modern version carries forward that legacy with practical improvements. The original had a hollow, squared plastic handle meant to hold matches and small gear, but that design made the knife front-heavy and awkward to wield. Here, a full tang runs the length of the blade, paired with contoured hardwood scales, providing better balance and a grip that stays comfortable through long use. The original blade’s super-hard steel allowed it to double as a pry bar but was tough to sharpen in the field. This updated model uses carbon steel, which keeps a sharp edge yet can be sharpened more easily when the need arises.
This machete is stout and reliable, built for light to medium chopping, just shy of what a hatchet can handle,as well as digging and emergency sawing. The blade’s top bevels are ground to a chisel edge, giving it durability and easier sharpening in rough conditions. Both blade and tang are a solid 3/8″ thick, strong enough to endure heavy use. An integral thumb rest includes a nail puller slot, a practical feature for survival situations. The included nylon sheath is trimmed with leather and has two belt loops fitting belts up to about 2-1/4″ wide, allowing for both tip-up and tip-down carry. This tool weighs about 2 pounds and measures 15-1/2″ overall, with a 10″ blade. Crafted with the spirit of battlefield practicality, it reflects the needs of those who rely on their blades in the harshest environments.
Fun fact: The Spetsnaz survival machete’s design influenced many military and civilian survival knives around the world, prized for combining toughness with field-serviceable maintenance.
