The Romans built an empire that shaped much of the ancient world, carrying Greek culture and ideas far beyond their origins. Yet, beneath the grandeur lay the harsh reality of the Gladiatorial games, bloody contests where men faced each other, wild beasts, and sometimes the fury of the crowd itself. Mosaics and stone carvings show us many types of gladiators, each with their own distinct gear. Among them, the Retiarius fought with a weighted net and trident, relying on speed and entanglement, while his opponent, the Secutor, bore a helmet, arm armor, a small shield, and greaves.

This arm defense piece takes inspiration from archaeological finds and detailed mosaics. Its design features segmented plates that cover the forearm, joined with a mail-covered elbow to strike a balance between solid protection and the flexibility needed for quick, precise swordplay. Made as a single unit, it could be worn on either arm, reflecting the practical and adaptable craftsmanship of Roman armorers.

Fun fact: The elbow joint in steel arm guards was often covered with chainmail to allow bending without sacrificing defense,a clever solution that required both metalworking skill and an understanding of human movement to keep a gladiator battle-ready.
