Description

Circa 12th Century
Saint Maurice, honored as the patron saint of soldiers, arms makers, and swordsmiths, led the Christian Theban Legion. This sword, attributed to him, is kept in the Weltliche Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury) in Vienna. It played a significant role in history, being used during the coronation ceremonies of Holy Roman Emperors from Otto IV in 1198 through Emperor Karl I in 1916. Its design echoes the style of the 11th century, a time when blades were evolving to balance the weight and sharpness needed for both cutting and thrusting in battle.

The blade is hand-forged from high carbon steel, prized for its toughness and ability to maintain a sharp edge through prolonged use. It features a full tang construction, where the steel runs the full length of the grip, giving the sword strength and balance crucial for effective handling in combat. The fittings are made of solid brass and bear hand-engraved designs, reflecting the skilled workmanship of the period and distinguishing this sword from others of its time. The wooden grip is wrapped tightly in silver wire, held in place by brass knotwork rings at each end, merging sturdy function with the decorative tastes of the era. The sword is paired with a leather scabbard and belt, designed to protect the blade and allow the wearer to carry it securely and comfortably.

This sword stands as more than a weapon; it embodies the deep connection between faith, craftsmanship, and warfare in medieval Europe. Saint Maurice’s name lent spiritual strength to those who bore arms in his honor, intertwining martial skill with sacred protection.

Fun fact: The St. Maurice Sword’s legacy lives on with the Swiss Guard, whose uniforms still display the emblem of Saint Maurice, linking today’s protectors to a long line of tradition.
