Description

Circa 16th – 17th Centuries

The Morion helmet grew out of the earlier Kettle Hat design and soon became a common sight among Spanish explorers and conquistadors during the 1500s and early 1600s. Its most notable features are the flat, broad brim and the raised comb, or “crest,” running along the top from front to back. This crest was more than decoration,it strengthened the steel against downward blows and helped to deflect strikes away from the wearer’s head. As time went on, smiths sometimes shaped the crest into more pronounced forms, blending utility with a touch of flair. Although closely associated with Spanish soldiers, the Morion saw widespread use among foot soldiers throughout Europe, valued for offering solid protection while allowing good visibility on the field. This particular helmet is forged from 18 gauge steel and fitted with a fabric liner and chin strap, reflecting the construction techniques of the era.

Overall Height: 10-1/2 inches

Fun Fact: The distinctive silhouette of the Spanish Morion helmet became so iconic that it often appears in theatrical plays and paintings as a symbol of the Age of Exploration and conquest.
