Description
The Smatchet, though strikingly unconventional in form, was forged with a specific role in mind. Born amid the chaos of the Second World War, it was designed by William Fairbairn, renowned for his work on close-quarters fighting tools such as the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife,to equip operatives of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and the British SAS (Special Air Service). This blade was intended for silent, deadly use on covert missions behind enemy lines. While the grip and pommel underwent several variations over time, the fundamental design stayed true, striking a balance between reach, weight, and cutting force.
This reproduction follows an original example, carefully studied and replicated. The blade is forged from high carbon steel, full tang to ensure strength and durability, and finished with a blued matte surface to minimize glare,an important factor for stealth operations. The cutting edge is sharpened razor-thin on one side, while about a third of the reverse edge is also sharpened, allowing for both slicing and chopping techniques. The grips are shaped from close-grained hardwood and secured firmly with two large rivets, offering a dependable hold in all conditions. The pommel is cast aluminum, pinned securely and drilled with a lanyard hole for retention. The sheath is lined with hardwood and covered in black leather, crafted to fit belts up to 3-1/4″ wide. The sheath’s belt loop is angled as on the originals, ensuring that the knife rides comfortably and securely at the wearer’s side.
