Description
Viking spearheads often reveal the blend of artistry and function that defined their weapons. A favored decorative technique was the “Niello” process, where an alloy, commonly silver mixed with sulfur, was rubbed into fine incised patterns on the metal surface and then heated. This chemical reaction darkened the inlaid areas, creating striking black designs against the polished steel. While modern methods may vary, this approach preserves the look of those ancient finishes. The spearhead fits a shaft with a diameter of 1”. Only the spearhead is provided here.
The Short Bladed Spear type traces its design to Celtic origins, later adopted and adapted by the Vikings. The shorter, stiffer blade reduced the risk of bending or breaking on impact and was well-suited to piercing the body armor worn during the Viking Age. This design reflects a practical balance between reach and durability.
Note: This spearhead is cast hollow and intended for display rather than combat or functional use.
