This knife first entered service in 1940, primarily issued to Russian reconnaissance and airborne troops. While the materials for the grip and sheath saw some variation over time, the core design stayed true to its original form. One notable feature is the reverse “S”-shaped finger guard. Russian soldiers were trained to hold the blade edge-up in close quarters, and this guard shape offered protection to the fingers while allowing a firm, swift grip in that position. The blade is hand-forged from high carbon steel and carefully tempered in a kiln to achieve a balance between hardness and flexibility. The finger guard is made from blackened steel, and the handle is a single piece of black-painted wood, reinforced near the guard with a blackened metal ring for strength. The sheath is simple but practical, crafted from black leather with a metal-reinforced tip and a thickened throat to fit belts up to 3-1/2″ wide.
  • Overall length: 10-1/2″
  • Blade length: 6″
  • Weight: 5 oz

Fun fact: The NR-40 was often favored by Soviet scouts not only for its stealthy design but also because its blade could be sharpened quickly in the field, a crucial advantage during sudden engagements on the Eastern Front.
