Description

The lorica squamata was a favored form of scale armor worn by Roman soldiers, especially during the Republic and well into the Empire’s days. This armor is crafted from countless small metal scales, known as squamae, each carefully riveted in horizontal rows onto a sturdy leather backing. The scales you see here are made from steel, shaped and polished by hand, then oiled to keep the iron from rusting,a crucial step for any blacksmith mindful of durability in the field.

This particular piece is a scaled skirt, designed to protect the lower body, covering the thighs and, depending on the wearer’s build, even the knees. The leather belt, measuring 60 inches, secures the skirt snugly around the waist, allowing for both mobility and defense. Such skirts were practical for legionaries who needed extra protection without sacrificing freedom of movement during battle.

The design wraps around the wearer, providing coverage both front and back, with each scale overlapping the one below to deflect blows and prevent penetration. The combination of leather and steel offered a balance of flexibility and strength that was essential on the ancient battlefield.
