Description
These sandals, called caligae, served as the standard footwear for Roman legionaries during their long marches and military campaigns. Forged from tough leather, their design balanced breathability with durability to withstand a variety of terrains. The soles were reinforced with hobnails, small iron studs hammered through the leather,to enhance traction and slow down wear, crucial for soldiers who covered many miles on foot. The open construction allowed water and mud to drain quickly, helping to prevent foot diseases that were common on extended campaigns. Their brown hue speaks to the practical and straightforward nature of Roman military equipment. Fun fact: The nickname “caligatus,” meaning “booted one,” was given to Roman soldiers because of these distinctive hobnailed sandals!
