Description

Scale armor stands as one of the earliest forms of protective gear, fashioned from numerous small metal scales, each carefully shaped and riveted in overlapping rows onto a sturdy backing of cloth or leather. This design, employed by warriors across many ancient cultures, provided flexible yet resilient defense, often extending to the barding of horses as well. In the era of the Roman Empire, scale armor, known as *lorica squamata*,offered soldiers an alternative to the more rigid *lorica segmentata*, granting improved resistance against crushing blows while allowing greater freedom of movement.

The Roman Lamellar Scale Armor Vest you see here is crafted from 20-gauge galvanized mild steel scales, each darkened to a muted sheen that catches the light without glaring. These metal plates are attached to a top-grain leather foundation, secured with leather fittings that echo the practical construction methods of the time. You’ll notice some areas where the leather rubbing and the oil used to preserve the metal have left subtle marks, signs of wear that lend this piece a sense of history and authenticity, reminiscent of armor that has seen many campaigns.

Measuring 18.5 inches from the bottom edge to the neckline and 14 inches from bottom to underarm, with a width of 23.62 inches across the chest (not including the lacing), this vest is sized to cover the torso much like the original Roman soldiers’ armor. The hand-assembled scales overlap tightly, creating a flexible shell that moves with the wearer while deflecting blows.

Whether donned for reenactments, theatrical displays, or living history demonstrations, this scale armor offers a tangible connection to the craftsmanship and battlefield realities of ancient Rome.
