Description
The Roman Eagle Gladius by Windlass carries the hallmarks of a blade meant to catch the eye, much like the swords wielded by commanders and champions in the heart of the empire. The guard and pommel bear three solid brass eagles, cast with sharp detail and given an antiqued finish to evoke the proud standard of Rome’s legions. The hilt itself is shaped from wood, stained a dark tone to provide a solid grip, while the guard and pommel are finished in a rich burgundy that speaks to the dignity of command.
The blade is forged from 1075 high carbon steel, a choice steel for strength and edge retention, then tempered and polished to a mirror sheen. This combination ensures the gladius holds its sharpness through battle, yet remains resilient against the stresses of combat.
The accompanying scabbard is built from wood, wrapped tightly in black leather for durability and grip, and extensively framed and plated in antiqued brass. It features hanging rings designed to be attached to a Roman baldric, allowing the wearer to carry the sword as a Roman soldier might have done on campaign.
Fun fact: The Roman gladius was so central to the legionary’s identity that the eagle, symbolizing Jupiter and Roman power, was often used as a decorative element on swords and standards to inspire courage and loyalty among the troops.
