Riveted steel mail is one of the most challenging types of armor to forge. Each ring is formed from mild steel, its ends carefully flattened before being overlapped and secured with a tiny rivet,a method that provides strength and durability against sword strikes and thrusts. This particular shirt follows traditional patterns observed in historical examples from museum collections. To help resist rust, each link is treated with a zinc coating, a practice that would have been unknown to medieval smiths but serves well to preserve the armor today. The shirt fits up to a 54” chest, measuring 33” in length with sleeves around 18” long, typically reaching just below the elbows on an average wearer. Mail like this was valued not only for the protection it offered but also as a testament to the smith’s skill and the countless hours invested in its creation.

Fun fact: In medieval times, mail shirts could contain tens of thousands of individual rings, each riveted by hand, making every piece a true labor of love for the armorer.
