Description

Circa 1450

This sword hails from the Italian Cinquedea tradition, a broad-bladed weapon favored in the mid-15th century. The blade’s generous width and deep fullers are true to the original design, crafted to lighten the blade while keeping it sturdy enough to withstand combat. The steel guard includes a protective ring, a functional feature meant to guard the hand during the swift, close-quarters exchanges common in its day. At the opposite end, the substantial steel pommel balances the wide blade, making the sword easier to wield with control. The grip is fashioned from wood and wrapped with brass fittings, ensuring a firm grasp in the heat of battle. Swords like this were often wielded alongside a round buckler, a small shield used in the popular European practice of sword and buckler fighting, where nimbleness and precise strikes took precedence over brute strength. The accompanying scabbard allowed for safe transport and quick access.
