Description

The Model 1917 Polish Saber was the first official saber adopted by the newly reestablished Polish state in 1918, following over a century of partitions. These sabers saw action during the 1920 Battle of Komar, a pivotal clash in the Polish-Soviet War. This engagement is noted as one of the last major cavalry-on-cavalry battles in history, where Polish lancers charged with determination, breaking the Soviet lines and helping to stem the tide of the Soviet advance into Europe.

This faithful reproduction by Universal Swords matches the size and markings of an original saber issued to the 1st Lancer Regiment of the Polish Legions. The blade is forged from 1055 high carbon steel, known for its balance of hardness and toughness, and carefully tempered to hold a sharp edge while resisting brittle failure. Both faces of the blade bear etched filigree patterns and patriotic Polish motifs, reflecting the pride and heritage carried by the cavalrymen who wielded them.

The guard and pommel are cast from brass, shaped with period-appropriate detail and ornamentation. The grip is crafted from wood, overlaid with tightly wrapped leather for a secure hold, and decorated with braided brass wire inlay,a common feature that also prevented slipping during maneuvers. The blade is firmly secured to the hilt using a nut assembly, ensuring durability in the heat of combat.

Fun fact: The Model 1917 saber remained in service through World War II, and many Polish officers carried them into battle as both a weapon and a symbol of their national identity and military tradition.
