Though not commonly encountered, pillow swords hold a curious place in the history of arms, often linked with rapiers due to their emphasis on thrusting rather than cutting. These weapons bear blades comparable in length to a rapier or sword rapier, but their guards and pommels are smaller, resembling those found on daggers, while the grips are scaled down for nimble handling. Traditionally, pillow swords were kept within arm’s reach, hung on the headboard or resting against the bedpost, ready to be drawn quickly within the confined space of a bedroom. The cramped quarters and low ceilings of the time allowed little room for broad swings, so the thrust was the most practical means of defense against intruders during the night.

The blade is forged from high carbon tempered steel and features a fuller, a groove running along its length that reduces weight without compromising strength,a technique blacksmiths use to strike a balance between resilience and maneuverability. The grip is fashioned by winding twisted steel wire tightly over a wooden core, ensuring a firm grasp when seconds count. The sword is housed in a leather scabbard reinforced with steel fittings, protecting the blade while allowing swift access.
