Description

Among the sabers born on the steppes of Central Asia, the Kilij stands out with a blade shape both familiar and unique. Its graceful curve fits the classic image of a saber, yet the blade broadens near the tip,a feature known as the “yalman.” This added weight near the edge increases the force of chopping strikes while still preserving a sharp point for effective thrusting. This balance between slicing and stabbing set the Kilij apart from more deeply curved swords like the Persian Shamshir.

This example is modeled after a 19th-century Ottoman Kilij style called the “Pala.” The Kilij was widely used by several great empires, the Seljuks, Timurids, Mamluks, and Ottomans, each adapting the blade’s design to their battlefield tactics. European cavalry who faced these blades took note, incorporating similar curves and weight distribution into their own swords, many of which continue to be used in ceremonial roles.

The brass guard features a geometric pattern framing the almond-shaped quillons, known as siperliks, decorated with floral motifs that echo Ottoman metalworking traditions. The hardwood grip ends in a back-curved pommel called the Kabza Basi, crafted to secure the hand during quick, fluid movements. This sword carries the practical design and spirit forged by centuries of combat and craftsmanship.

The leather scabbard is reinforced with brass fittings at the throat, mid-collar, and chape, along with brass rings for carrying, blending utility with authentic period style.

Swords like this one may be personalized with a single line of engraving along the center of the blade, from grip to tip, accommodating up to 25 characters.

Fun fact: The Kilij’s widening near the tip allowed warriors to deliver powerful cleaving blows capable of splitting helmets or armor, making it a weapon both feared and respected on the battlefield.
