Description

In the year 1509, under the reign of Ferdinand V of Castile and Aragon, Spanish forces embarked on a campaign against the Moors that reached far beyond the Iberian Peninsula into the Mediterranean. Led by Pedro Navarro, the troops landed near Oran, in present-day Algeria. By securing the high ground overlooking the city, they employed long pikes to breach its walls and launched their assault. The defenders, accustomed to traditional Moorish fighting styles, struggled against the aggressive sword-and-buckler tactics favored by the Spanish infantry. This approach relied on swift, precise strikes with a backsword, paired with a small shield that allowed for both defense and nimble movement. The battle resulted in heavy losses and prisoners among the Moors, and the campaign pressed on with the capture of Tripoli the next year, compelling local rulers to pay tribute to the Spanish crown.

The backsword known as the Sword of Oran represents the type wielded by these infantrymen, who were regarded as among the most effective foot soldiers in early 16th-century Europe. Forged from steel, the blade was crafted to serve both cutting and thrusting purposes, with dimensions and balance tailored for the close, intense combat typical of the era. The grip combines brass and wood, offering a solid hold that endures the rigors of battle while maintaining a straightforward design. Paired with a leather scabbard, this reproduction honors the practical utility and fighting spirit embodied by the soldiers who carried such weapons.
