Description
This helmet is crafted following the Gjermundbu type, a form uncovered from a burial mound in Norway during 1943. Made from 18 gauge steel with brass fittings, it represents the kind of protective headgear a Viking chieftain might have worn both in battle and at ceremonial occasions. The face mask, a notable feature on some Viking helmets, serves to guard the wearer’s face while permitting clear sight and breath, blending defense with a fierce presence. Inside, a soft, adjustable cloth liner provides comfort and would have helped cushion blows during combat. Weighing just over four pounds, the helmet offers a balance between protection and mobility. This piece reflects the work of Norse smiths, who skillfully forged iron and brass to produce armor that was both practical and a mark of rank.
- Wt: 4 lbs / 10 oz
Fun Fact: Contrary to popular myth, Viking helmets did not have horns; the iconic horned helmet image was popularized centuries later and was not part of actual Norse warrior gear.
