Description

This war axe, now preserved within the British Museum in London, reveals much about the skill and needs of warriors from an earlier age. Its shaft stretches to about 30 inches, longer than many axes of its kind, paired with a compact steel head. This combination allowed fighters to deliver swift, controlled strikes, essential for the chaos of close combat. The blade itself measures 5 inches in length with a cutting edge of the same size, forged from steel roughly a quarter-inch thick, thick enough to hold a keen edge and endure the rigors of battle, yet light enough to keep the weapon nimble. Weighing around one and a half pounds, this axe strikes a careful balance between force and speed, qualities that a seasoned fighter would depend on when facing foes in tight quarters.

Note: Though this axe did not see widespread production, it embodies the design principles and practical demands of its time, reflecting the careful thought smiths and warriors invested in their tools.

  • Head: 5″ long, 1/4″ thick, 5″ cutting edge
  • Weight: 1-1/2 lbs

Fun fact: Norse battle axes were not only weapons of war but also carried deep symbolic meaning, many were personalized with carvings and decorations that told the story of the warrior’s lineage and allegiance within their clan.
