Description

The Spangenhelm is a helmet design that was widely used throughout medieval Europe during the Early Middle Ages. Its name comes from the German words “Spangen,” meaning the metal strips or braces that form the helmet’s framework, and “helm,” meaning helmet. This construction method involved riveting together several metal segments, typically four to six, held in place by these sturdy strips, creating a rounded cap that provided solid protection while conserving materials and simplifying production. By the 6th century, the Spangenhelm had become a common sight on European battlefields, valued for offering a practical balance between defense and ease of manufacture.

This particular helm is made from 18 gauge steel, with robust rivets securing the framework, and includes a prominent nasal guard designed to protect the face from direct strikes. Inside, a soft black cloth liner can be adjusted for a comfortable fit, cushioning the wearer’s head during the rigors of combat. The design reflects the needs of warriors who required durable yet relatively lightweight headgear that could be produced and maintained with the tools available to smiths of the time.

Fun fact: The Spangenhelm’s segmented construction allowed smiths and warriors to replace or repair damaged sections quickly in the field,a practical feature that helped keep helmets battle-ready. This approach influenced helmet designs for generations, including those worn by Norman knights at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
