Description
The Windlass Mora knife takes its shape from the traditional blades forged deep within the forests and fjords of Scandinavia. These knives are built with straightforward, practical design, made to serve faithfully in the field without fuss or frills.
The blade is crafted from X46Cr13 stainless steel, a high-carbon alloy known for holding a keen edge while standing up to the damp and grit of outdoor work. Its classic Scandinavian grind features a single bevel on each side that meets in a sharp, acute angle. This grind is prized for delivering clean, precise cuts and for being easy to sharpen even in the wild. A solid brass guard sits between blade and handle, offering just enough protection for your hand without hindering the fine control needed during skinning or carving.
The handle is a marriage of bone and Sissoo hardwood, a dense timber from northern India. It’s shaped with smooth curves that nestle comfortably in the palm, balancing the blade so it feels like a natural extension of your arm when you work. This balance is key when you’re spending hours crafting or preparing game in the forest.
Secured in a sturdy leather belt sheath, the knife stays close at hand yet ready for quick use. The sheath’s design echoes the rugged environments where these knives have proven their worth. Measuring 8 inches overall with a 3-3/4 inch mirror-polished blade, the blade carries a Rockwell hardness of 52,firm enough to hold an edge yet soft enough to be sharpened with simple tools in the field.
Fun fact: The Mora knife’s lineage stretches back to the 1600s in Sweden’s Dalarna region, where it was a trusted companion for woodsmen, fishermen, and farmers alike, tools born of necessity and shaped by the Nordic wilderness.
