Description

The Naue II sword type stands as a remarkable weapon forged nearly 3,500 years ago, around 1450 BC. These swords were originally cast entirely from bronze, featuring long, slender blades that were advanced for their time. The hilt was constructed from organic materials, such as wood or bone, secured to the blade’s tang by rivets and pins, creating a solid bond suited for the rigors of close combat. These swords remained in use for over seven centuries, marking a transitional period from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, with later variants adopting iron blades while maintaining the classic hilt design. They were widespread across regions stretching from northern Italy to the far reaches of the Mediterranean, with particular prominence in the Aegean world.

This reproduction honors the original’s form while employing tempered modern steel for the blade, ensuring strength and resilience beyond that of ancient bronze. The hilt is cast in bronze and riveted directly onto the thick blade tang, replicating the sturdy construction methods of the past. Accompanying the sword is a robust leather sheath, crafted with hand-embossed and tooled patterns, and fitted with antiqued hanging rings. These rings allow the wearer to carry the sword vertically or at an angle using a baldric setup (note: sword belt not included), much as warriors would have done centuries ago.

Fun fact: The Naue II sword design was so effective and enduring that it continued to influence European sword-making well into the early Iron Age, making it one of the longest-lasting sword types in ancient history.
