Description

This open helmet, known as the Morion, was commonly worn by foot soldiers and guardsmen from the mid-16th to the early 17th century. Forged from 18 gauge steel, its rounded shape with a wide brim helped deflect blows while maintaining good visibility and ventilation on the battlefield. The brass accents reinforce critical points, such as the crest and brim edges, providing added durability where the helmet might take the most impact. Protective ear flaps guard the sides of the head without restricting hearing, and a sturdy chin strap keeps the helmet firmly in place during the chaos of combat. Inside, an adjustable cloth liner cushions the wearer’s head and helps absorb shocks. Atop the crest, a plume holder allowed soldiers to display feathers or insignia, marking rank or allegiance. Fun fact: The Morion helmet’s distinctive comb-like crest earned it the nickname “comb morion,” and it became closely associated with Spanish conquistadors during their expeditions in the New World.
