Description
This miniature cast pewter Archer’s Sallet Helmet faithfully represents the characteristic form of the headgear worn by English and continental archers in the 15th century. The sallet was crafted to protect the wearer’s head while preserving clear sightlines and freedom of movement, crucial for archers who required unobstructed vision and nimbleness to aim and react swiftly in the heat of combat. Its rounded skull deflected strikes from swords and arrows, while the elongated tail at the back shielded the neck without restricting motion. The open face design allowed for better airflow and communication among troops. This scaled-down replica captures the essence of medieval armor-making and makes a sturdy paperweight or a striking piece of historical décor.
- Measures 3-1/2″ x 3″
Fun fact: The original Archer’s Sallet often featured a removable visor or a simple open faceplate, as archers needed to balance protection with the ability to see and breathe freely during long battles.
